Cloud migration checklist: 10 steps for a smooth enterprise transition
Road Financial Editorial

Cloud migrations fail in predictable ways: scope creep, surprise costs, and applications that behave differently the moment they leave the data center. This checklist condenses lessons from dozens of enterprise transitions into ten concrete steps.
Before you move
1. Inventory everything. Shadow IT is real. Discovery tools plus stakeholder interviews reveal the applications, integrations, and data flows that official documentation misses.
2. Classify workloads. Not everything belongs in the cloud, and not everything that does should move the same way. Sort each system: rehost, replatform, refactor, retire, or retain.
3. Model costs honestly. Lift-and-shift estimates routinely miss egress fees, licensing changes, and over-provisioned instances. Build a 24-month cost model, not a launch-day one.
4. Define success metrics. Latency targets, recovery objectives, and cost ceilings agreed upfront prevent moving goalposts later.
During the migration
5. Start with low-risk wins. A successful pilot — internal tools, dev environments — builds organizational confidence and surfaces process gaps cheaply.
6. Migrate data with verification. Checksums, parallel runs, and reconciliation reports. Data integrity issues found post-cutover are exponentially harder to fix.
7. Keep a rollback path. Every cutover plan needs a tested way back. Hope is not a strategy.
8. Secure as you go. Cloud security is configuration security: identity policies, network segmentation, and encryption settings reviewed at every milestone — not in a final audit.
After cutover
9. Optimize relentlessly. The first month of usage data reveals right-sizing opportunities that typically cut spend 20–30%.
10. Upskill the team. The migration ends; operations never do. Invest in training and runbooks so the new environment is owned, not just inherited.
Road Financial guides enterprises through every step — assessment, execution, and post-migration optimization — delivering cloud transitions that finish on time and run efficiently from day one.
